I’ve been baking for 49 years. Longer than any other thing, really, and I enjoyed learning everything from the basics through multi step French pastry. I’ve baked countless birthday, wedding, anniversary, funeral, baby shower, snack and coffee cakes. Puff pastry, brioche, Danish, artisan breads, pizza, crackers, quiche, muffins, scones, and thousands upon thousands of cookies came out of ovens from tiny apartment stoves to massive commercial Wolf ovens. I read cookbooks like other gals read romance novels. Yes, I love to bake.
I’ve decided to take a break. The oven is off, the kitchen is closed. Just for the summer, for now, anyway. “Cakes and Tea” is going on break as well. Maybe I’ll be thinking about baking or maybe I won’t. Fall is the baking New Year, so perhaps I’ll be excited to fire up the oven and jump into a big bowl of dough. As my Grandfather Pat used to say, “I’ll observe myself closely and see what I do.”
