Trifle is a classic dessert that has been served at Afternoon Tea for generations. We include several recipes for trifle in this book. Part of what makes a trifle interesting is its visual appeal. It is comprised of layers of cake and custard enhanced with fruit, whipped cream, nuts, spoonsful of jam, broken cookies and whatever else the hostess wants to include in her trifle. It is customary to serve trifle in a trifle bowl, a large footed clear glass bowl through which all of these intriguing ingredients will be visible. Like cake pedestals, trifle bowls can be purchased at department stores or at kitchen stores, often at fairly reasonable prices. But if someone who loves you should give you a cut crystal trifle bowl for your birthday, that would be very nice too.
